Delivering real improvement means implementing solutions for both complex organizational and technical problems. Our training and on the job coaching prepares manufacturing leaders for the operational challenges ahead.
We will work with you to identify the key skills and training that your team will need, and tailor the training plan for your improvement project as needed. All training is delivered by our consultants, drawing on their experience in implementing solutions with our clients.
Super-Improver Training
As a sustainable and far-reaching initiative, our Super-Improver program develops in-house leaders who have the knowledge and skills to deliver and continue step-change operational improvement. Offered alongside project deployments, the course aims to create a long-term replacement for our consulting support. The program is tailored to the specific needs of each client, but can include:
- Recruitment of suitable external candidates, including referrals from our own selection process
- Rigorous selection procedure for both internal and external candidates
- Intensive training and graduation
- On the job coaching to deliver successful outcomes
- Organizational design to sustain the Super-Improver capability
This course is also available in a more condensed version: Mini Super-Improver Training.
Advanced Industrial Problem Solving Training
Run twice a year and in association with CATCH at their training facility in North East Lincolnshire, this course provides guidance and skills to those responsible for solving complex issues to root cause.
Spread over three days and designed to be challenging and fun, it’s an intensive practical industrial simulation, set in a residential environment with like-minded individuals looking to take the next step.
Day one starts with theory, before moving quickly into the simulator for days two and three. Stepping outside the classroom environment, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with a real plant, including personnel and a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, which uses water to simulate chemical, pharmaceutical and certain FMCG processes.
Set against a series of real-life based case studies, we have devised a series of scenarios to find the root cause of complex failures which are reducing both plant output and raw material yield.
The objective is to give those running, maintaining and improving processes a more profound learning experience, that shows more clearly the importance of:
- Making complex processes more understandable
- Spotting patterns in telemetry and output data, so that causal links can be established
- Interaction as a team with others and the power of communication, questions and listening – this is not as easy as it sounds!
- Direct, independent measurement of critical process parameters, to verify that the operators and computers are telling us the true facts
Monday
- Afternoon travel to Humberside for evening introduction and a meal at the hotel.
Tuesday
- Classroom based introduction to pattern recognition and Fault Tree Modelling.
- Brief and introduction to the industrial simulator and CATCH staff.
Wednesday
- Case study on the industrial simulator on Process Phase 1: Variation in Output.
- Introduction to case study simulation 2.
Thursday
- Case study on the industrial simulator on Process Phase 2: Variation in Yield.
- Debrief, close and travel home.

“The Super-Improvers training program is a key component of our Operational Excellence capability building road-map. This training program has been transformational on preparing the expert group who lead productivity initiatives across any area of the company. Our internal goal is to achieve 1% of all Team Members with the Super-Improvers (master) expertise in a 5 year timeframe. Chartwell supported this program since the beginning of the journey: on the design of the program, on the candidate’s selection process, on providing the training and on coaching the candidates during their graduation projects. The collaboration between our team and Chartwell in this endeavour has been unique – lessons sharing and intense challenges lead to one of the most successful capability building stories that we have run to date.”
