Boost capacity and reduce costs with Chartwell’s Labor Productivity Program. Drive up headline productivity metrics by 15-25% within 10-24 weeks.
Key features
- Reduce labor costs and optimize workforce allocation without compromising production quality.
- Quickly realize tangible benefits, enhancing overall operational efficiency.
- Achieve long-term efficiency gains that support your ongoing success.
Typical use cases
There are two main use cases where this service brings the most value:
- Labor is limiting production output e.g. line experiencing downtime or delays due to lack of available resources causing OTIF issues.
- Cost reduction is required and labor cost is a large proportion of overall spend in order to improve gross margin.

Industries
We have a strong track record of results across industries:
Opportunity Assessment
Typically, all projects begin with a 1–3 week Opportunity Scan at the relevant client site(s). The goal of the assessment is to assess:
- How much improvement is possible (i.e. by how much can labor productivity be sustainably increased and what impact would that have on output/uptime or cost?)
- What would be required to deliver that outcome – length of time, resourcing, workstreams etc.
Delivering this requires a mixture of data analysis, process investigation and direct observations of Labor activities on the shop floor and workshops with process experts.
The output of the assessment is a prioritized list of improvement opportunities for improving labor productivity, typically 20-30%, with a project plan to deliver those improvements, typically between 3-6 months.
We aim to identify at least twice as much opportunity during an assessment to be confident we can deliver the project target. At the end of the assessment, we will present our findings to a team of client figures together with a proposal for delivering the target improvement for a go/no go decision to be made.
The Rapid Results Team
Chartwell consultants come on-site and lead a Rapid Results Team (RRT) to quickly deliver step-change results.
The RRT is a small, cross-functional client team led by a Chartwell consultant that has responsibility for delivering progress towards an outcome.
This will vary depending on the workstream, but typically will involve:
- Taking a data-driven approach to defining standard times for tasks and setting clear goals for each individual and shift, as well as robust systems for accurately capturing delays
- Introducing front line accountability tools to track progress through the day – making it clear for the whole team whether we are winning or losing at any given point in time
- Problem solving to eliminate the most frequent and highest impact causes of lost time – whether technical, organizational, behavioral or logistical
- Simplifying tasks done by team in question – lowering the effort and time required to complete tasks
- Optimizing the site’s tiered review structures to ensure that there is accountability for meeting targets, and escalations/support requests are also promptly actioned.
Typical outcomes of RRT efforts are improved productivity, reduced lost time and better accountability across the business.
Delivering results
The overall timeline to deliver target results depends on the process and industry, but typically range between 3-6 months, resulting in 20-30% sustained improvement in resource productivity.
The precise timeline and effort required to deliver target results depends heavily on the nature of the processes involved, the industry, the availability data capture systems, and the setup of the relevant department(s).
By the end of the project phase, we expect to be in a position where the team are sustainably delivering increased productivity – translating to either higher output with the same labor pool, or fewer labor hours required to achieve the same output.
Results are sustained through a robust set of tiered review meetings in the given departments, run by key client team members.

Sustaining results
The extent to which teams will continue to deliver further improvement vs. sustaining the results delivered after the conclusion of the Chartwell-led RRT will depend on the nature of the process and the expectations set at the project outset.
In every scenario, Chartwell will leave client teams with a bespoke plan for sustaining their results, typically including:
- Handover of management of key data capture or visualization tools, tiered review meetings and accountability structures
- Sustainable processes & training for maintaining top KPIs to show resource visibility and loss paretos
- Coaching to lead key meetings for 1-2 key individuals
- Training in relevant technical skills for specific SMEs (e.g. technical problem solving, Advanced SMED, Line / DILO Studies)
- Improvement Attitudes training
For clients who want their teams to deliver further improvement after Chartwell support has ended, we have additional supporting powerful offerings:
- Supervisor training
- Tiered Reviews
