Unlock peak efficiency with Chartwell’s fully supported Planned Outage Compression Program designed to reduce downtimes by 20-30% within 2-4 months.
Key features
- Every task required for planned outages is mapped, ensuring all necessary parts, vendors, qualifications, tools, and structures are in place for a timely shutdown and restart.
- Gain reliable timelines and improved planning capabilities, leading to smoother and more predictable operations.
- Through structured coaching and robust tools, ensure that performance improvements are maintained long-term.
Typical use cases
There are two main use cases where this service brings the most value:
- Time lost to planned outages leads to significant loss of capacity, causing lost sales or OTIF failures.
- Change of line and outage duration regularly exceeds planned time, and/or unpredictability of outage duration causes problems for Sales & Operational Planning.

Industries
We have a strong track record of results across industries:
Opportunity Assessment
Typically, all projects begin with a 1–3 week Opportunity Scan at the relevant client site(s). The goal of the assessment is to assess:
- How much improvement is possible i.e. by how much can planned outage durations be sustainable compressed?
- What would be required to deliver that outcome i.e. length of time, resourcing, workstreams etc.
Delivering this requires a mixture of data analysis, process investigation and workshops with process experts. Direct observation of planned outage activities on the shopfloor, will occur if possible.
The output of the scan is a prioritized list of improvement opportunities for reducing Planned Outage durations, typically 20-30% with a project plan to deliver those improvements, typically between 8-16 weeks.
We aim to identify at least twice as much opportunity during an assessment to be confident we can deliver the project target.
At the end of the Scan, we will present our findings to a team of client figures together with a proposal for delivering the target improvement for a go/no go decision to be made.
The Rapid Results Team
Chartwell consultants come on-site and lead a Rapid Results Team (RRT) to quickly deliver step-change results.
The RRT is a small, cross-functional client team led by a Chartwell consultant that has responsibility for driving performance from baseline to target.
This will vary depending on the workstream, but typically will involved repeated cycles of data collection to identify the highest value opportunities, then work to implement solutions – e.g. through trials to validate possible technical, organizational or other process changes and subsequent update of new SOPs, training etc.
Typical outcomes of RRT efforts are simplification of the overall process, reduction in unplanned downtime events, and more efficient communication and organization of the teams responsible for shutdown activities. Taken together, reductions in average length of 20-30% are possible.
Delivering results
The overall timeline to deliver target results depends on the process and nature of the downtime, but results should be seen from the first planned outage post-project start. Progress is driven by three main workstreams:
More effective planning
Granular and visualized planning of the planned outage allows stakeholders to understand the process in greater detail and work more cohesively. All parts of the process have detailed, actively-managed plans for activities, materials and support requirements.
Deeper analysis of potential problems
Detailed analysis of past outages, workshops to identify potential issues and granular forward planning sets the team up for success in mitigating common difficulties and avoiding delays experienced in the past.
More efficient teamwork
Efficient, cross-functional structures for pre-shutdown planning, progress & planning reviews during shutdown and subsequent production restart enable effective decision making and coordination.
Typical projects range between 2-4 months, resulting in 20-30% sustained reduction of planned outage duration.
Sustaining results
By the end of the project phase, the team can sustainably deliver shutdown periods that are significantly shorter and more consistent than the baseline time. Key client team members are trained in the tools and methods, leaving them with the skills and confidence to be successful in managing future planned outages and driving further improvement.
In every scenario, Chartwell will leave client teams with a bespoke plan for sustaining their results, typically including:
- Handover of management of key tools, meetings and structures
- Sustainable processes & training for maintaining top KPIs
- Coaching to manage future outages for 1-2 key individuals
- Training in relevant skills for specific SMEs (e.g. building visual plans, running effective meetings, using visual tools and templates created during the project)
- Improvement Attitudes training
For clients who want their teams to deliver further improvement after Chartwell support has ended, we have additional powerful offerings:
- SuperImprover, SuperImprover Lite and SuperUser Training Programs
- Digital solutions for more robust and advanced KPIs
