Elevate your productivity and maximize efficiency with Chartwell’s Runtime Efficiency Program. Our solution is crafted to deliver sustainable improvements, often leading to a 20-50% increase in productivity and 5-15% reduction in total unplanned downtime.
Key features
- Increased productivity by optimizing the use of existing assets and labor.
- Reduction in total unplanned downtime, ensuring smoother operations and less disruption during planned uptime periods.
- Implementation of robust structures and tools, along with coaching, to lock in and maintain new performance levels long-term.
Typical use cases
There are two main use cases where this service brings the most value:
- An organization needs more capacity from existing assets and labor and the lost time during runtime represents a significant fraction of total time
- Improvements in line efficiency (e.g. output per shift) could be used to drive labor savings, or to free up labor to run additional lines

Industries
We have a strong track record of results across industries:
Opportunity Assessment
Typically, all projects begin with a 1–3 week Opportunity Scan at the relevant client site(s). The goal of the assessment is to assess:
- How much improvement is possible i.e. how much scope is there to increase runtime efficiency
- What would be required to deliver that outcome i.e. length of time, resourcing, workstreams etc.
Delivering this requires a mixture of data analysis, process investigation and direct observations on the shop floor and workshops with process experts.
The output of the scan is a prioritized list of improvement opportunities for increasing runtime efficiency, typically 20-50%, with a project plan to deliver those improvements, between 3-6 months.

The Rapid Results Team
Chartwell consultants come on-site and lead a Rapid Results Team (RRT) to quickly increase runtime efficiency.
The RRT is a small, cross-functional client team led by a Chartwell consultant that has responsibility for driving runtime efficiencyfrom an agreed baseline to the target level within the project timeframe.
This team will include members of the shop floor operational team and work closely with the wider group and supporting departments as needed to drive the desired changes. The RRT will also spend much of their time on the line, ensuring that we have the best possible understanding of what the losses are and why they happen
The team will use direct observation and production data to identify the highest value opportunities then work to implement solutions. This could include running trials to increase line speed, developing and rolling out new best practices for running the line more efficiently, problem solving on recurring issues, centerlining activities to ensure successful start ups, and more.
Typical outcomes of RRT efforts are an extended period of running at or above target RTE. This is back up by collation, iteration and communication of best practices like settings sheets, problem solves, run speeds, etc., between shifts and coaching for key client team members to monitor, control and respond to dips in RTE.
Taken together, sustained increases in runtime efficiency of 20-50% are possible.
Delivering results
The overall timeline to deliver target results depends on the process and industry, but initial results are typically seen within the first 3-5 weeks after the start of implementation work.
By generating “quick wins” and showing how the impact of these can be seen in output increases, the team builds up momentum and belief that the longer-term and more technically challenging opportunities can also be successfully implemented.
By the end of the project phase, we leave client teams in a position where they are sustainably achieving output targets, with clear processes in place for managing runtime efficiency and driving further improvement.
Typical projects range between 3-6 months, resulting in 5-15% reductions in total unplanned downtime (including short stops). This combined with speed increases lead to sustainable 20-50% output increases.
Note – to deliver maximum impact, these projects are often paired with efforts to reduce planned downtime such as, Changeovers and MT issues.
Sustaining results
Chartwell will leave client teams with a bespoke plan for locking in their results, typically including:
- Integration of insightful data into hourly, shiftly and daily routines to monitor and drive performance through fact-based decision-making e.g., integration of short-interval control data into shift handover meetings
- Upskilling of supervisors and operators to solve technical problems and drive performance in their shifts
- Poke-yoke (un-undoable) solutions for technical problems
- Use of visual management, SOPs and skills matrices to embed the behaviors needed for high performance operation irrespective of team turnover
For clients who want their teams to deliver further improvement after Chartwell support has ended, we have additional powerful offerings:
- SuperImprover, SuperImprover Lite and SuperUser Training Programs
- Supervisor Training
- Digital solutions for more robust and advanced KPIs
